The strange thing I’m proud of is that no team has ever won the Women’s Euro after being eliminated from Group A or Group B, and 2009 (England) was the only time a team from Group C or D won. Had reached. Last.

There are some caveats to this, not least that the competition had no more than eight teams until 2009 and expanded to just 16 teams as recently as 2017. However, there is a science behind it too. Being in Group A or B means you have more rest between matches and more time to recover from knockout fixtures. Group A winners also generally have the kindest knockout route. If you want the best route to Basel, you’ll want to be in group A or B.

Speaking to media colleagues from other countries across Europe at the Swisstec Convention Center in Lausanne, there is one team they are hoping to avoid: England. And it’s not hard to understand why when teams are selected from Pot 2, they would be keen to stay away from the holders. UEFA’s decision to prioritize the draw pot based on performance in the Nations League rather than world ranking makes Pot 3 certainly much stronger than Pot 2, where England – ranked fourth in the world – are joined respectively by Denmark, Italy and Iceland was joined by teams ranked 12th, 13th and 14th in the world. The Lionesses were comfortable 5-1 winners over the Italians in February to reflect the change in the strength of that pot. The chances are that whichever group England are in will probably be a ‘group of death’.
